There were also good results for our Dyffryn Ladies team who finished 9th from 19 in their first ever race and the Vets team finished 3rd in the Veteran category. Well done everybody!

Aberaeron Race 2012

Aberporth do the double and the Men are crowned League champions!

From front - Oli Box, Owen Harries, Chris New, Andy Mayer & Kathy French (cox)

Aberporth’s Dolwen Men team (Andy Mayer, Chris New, Owen Harries, Oli Box, Tim Ogilvie & cox Kathy French) are the South Wales League Champions after winning their first ever Welsh Joint League Race. Going into the race Aberporth where just one point ahead of rivals Llangwm and so needed to finish ahead of them to cement the league title. Llangwm got off to a flying start and Aberporth where lying in around 4th place half way down the first straight. They didn’t panic though and worked hard to pass  Llangwm, New Quay & Aberdyfi  to get into 1st place going around the final buoy. It was a long slog to home, and despite a great late surge from Mumbles, they held on to win the race by four boat lengths.

Back left to right - Charlotte Bleach, Leanne Philips, Hayley Morris, Kathy French and Carl Rich (cox)

Aberporth Tily Ladies team (Leanne Philips, Hayley Morris, Charlotte Bleach, Kathy French and cox Carl Rich) also ended the season on a high by claiming their first win of the season and also their first ever Welsh Joint League Race win. It was a stunning performance by the ladies who lead the race from start to finish and crossed the line over 10 boat lengths ahead of the league winners New Quay.

Also well done to the Veterans, Novices and Mixed teams who competed well and added to this fantastic day for the club.

And once again a massive thank you to our supporters for coming up and cheering us on, you really are the best!

Aberporth Senior Vets claim their first win

Despite a severe lack of training over the last few weeks the club put in an excellent performance. Conditions were interesting to say the least, I know bow rowers particularly enjoyed it ;)

The highlight of the day was the Mens Vets team: Charlie Millar, Tony Watmough, Carl Rich, Andy Cushley and cox Haley Morris (pictured above) winning their first race  in the Senior Veterans category. Well done guys!

The Dolwen Men’s team kept themselves top of the league with one race to go by finishing second. Tilly Ladies battled hard to try and get that illusive first win of the season but also had to settle for second place. Dyffryn Ladies came in a very respectable fourth. And In the Mixed race Tilly finished third.

Ladies win in the 2012 Mermaid Race (Handicapped)

Due to rough conditions out to sea the race had to be shortened to around 7 miles. No one was  too bothered by this as meant we would get to the beer tent earlier.

The Ladies were the only Ladies team on the day unfortunately and so won their class. They also did really well overall and finished only a minute behind the Mens team.

Massive thank you to Tim Wilcox and Jeff English for coxing at short notice, obviously couldn’t have done it without you.

Aberporth Race 2012

What a fabulous day, great weather, great racing and great support!

The sea was quite rough and a mixture of rowing and surfing was required. This made for some fun racing with positions continually changing as teams caught the waves.

New Quay seemed to handle the tricky conditions better than others and took first place in the Seniors, Ladies, Novice, Girls U16′s and Mixed Races.

Of course our regatta wouldn’t have been such a success if it wasn’t for all the fantastic support we had on the day. A massive thank you to all the safety boat crew, all the helpers in the marque, Dai Ogilvie and Steve Harries (race commentary), Gily Llewelyn (photography), Howard & Ryan (time keeping), our race sponsors, our fantastic families and friends aka Green Army and Sue & Terry McGonigle  for our fantastic new club banner.

Well done to all teams that took part and thank you for supporting our event, hopefully see you all again next year!

PYC Race 2012

Aberporth Dolwen Men claim their second win of the Welsh Sea Rowing League season and the clubs new members win the Novice ladies race.

Winners of Ladies Novice Race PYC 2012 - (From left) Tanya Evans, Amy Nicoll, Charlotte, Emma Jones

The Dolwen Men team had to work hard in tricky conditions to hold off a New Quay team who pushed them all the way. Going around the final buoy, the two teams were neck and neck but Aberporth managed to pull away on the final straight and claim their second league win in a row.

In the Novice race, four new members who have only been rowing for a couple of weeks, managed to battle their way around the choppy course and finish third overall and first in the Novice Ladies class.

In the Ladies race Aberporth Tilly Ladies finished fourth in a very strong field that saw Wisemans Bridge take first place.

In the final race of the day, Aberporth Tilly Whim Mixed team started poorly but worked their way through the field to finished third out of nineteen.

Well done to all 6 Aberporth teams who competed, Pembrokeshire Yatch Club Rowing Team for an excellent event and of course our Green Army supporters!

The Men’s team win in style in first South league race of the season! Managing to get the lead into the first buoy they held off the challenge from the home team and last seasons league champions, Llangwm to finish with a few boat lengths to spare.

We also had great results with all the other teams.  The new men’s vets team finished second in the Veterans category. The ladies battled hard and claimed third place in their race. The mixed team had an excellent row and finished in second place despite having a bad start and two of our newest members Amy Bird and Sina Rapthel, competing in their first ever race, made up half of a mixed team that did really well to finish seventh out of thirteen.

Well done everyone, as always thank you to our fabulous supporters and roll on the Aberaeron Race on Sunday 24th June.

New Quay Race 2012

An excellent first league race regatta! Sea was calm, sun was shinning, huge Green Army support and excellent performances from all the Aberporth teams.

Aberporth’s Results – Ladies finished 4th of 16 with new member Deanne Jones competing in her first race, well done! In the Mens there were also changes in the crews, Dolwen finished 7th and Tilly Whim, with new member Tony Watmough in his first race, finished 14th out of 20, nice one guys. In the mixed race both teams did really well to finish 7th and 11th out of 24.

At their third attempt Crannog were finally given a break with weather and sea conditions and put on a great event.

Aberporth Teams Race highlights:

Tilly ladies did it again, winning their second league race in a row! They did it in some style finishing a considerable distance ahead of the rest of the 11 strong field. Well done team!

Leanne Philips, Donna Philips, Hayley Morris, Kathy French & Tim Ogg (cox)

We had our first junior team competing since the club reformed 3 years ago. Tilly Juniors did really well in difficult sea conditions to win the under 18 girls race. Well done to all the girls and to Chris New (junior coach) who has worked hard with the juniors over the last few weeks to get the team ready to race.

Girls Under 18's Team with coach Chris New

There was a good battle in the mixed race between the two Aberporth teams. Despite both teams being unfortunate at the start of the race they worked their way through the field but couldn’t shake off each other. They battled right to the end finishing in 7th & 8th with Dolwen finishing just 4 seconds ahead of Tilly Whim.

Well done everyone today.  Race pics

New Quay Race 2011

This was a cracking day!  Sunny and hot with lovely sea conditions (a rare thing this year). Sat on New Quay beach we felt like holiday makers.

We had a good club performance today  with the two mixed teams finishing middle of the pack. The Mens team battling back from a very bad start due to confusion at the start line to finish 3rd and the performance of the day, the ladies finished 2nd pushing Llangwm all the way to the line, fantastic effort!
